This invitation to build a flower activity combines two of our favorite things— spring flowers and seed crafts! This is a wonderful low-waste craft using recycled cardboard and any dried beans, seeds or grains that you already have at home (and you can certainly substitute other items or paint the pieces if you do not have any beans on hand). My son loves open ended activities like these because they provide a lot of space for creativity and there are so many variations that can be created. I love seeing your projects, so don’t forget to keep tagging me in your pictures so I can share them with our community (and if you share a photo on Instagram of your seed mosaic project and use hashtag #woodlarkseedcrafts before the end of Spring this year, you’ll be entered to win a credit to the web shop!
Materials:
– cardboard
– dried beans and seeds
– mini clothespins
– school glue
How to Make the Cardboard Flower Pieces
Cut round circles and petal shapes out of recycled cardboard. Attach dried beans/seeds or grains to all of the cardboard cutouts using school glue. Glue one mini clothespin to the backside of each petal. Let dry.
How to Do The Build A Flower Activity:
Lay all of the pieces out and let your child create their own flowers by clipping the petals onto each center. Educational variations: Assign a number to each flower and prompt your child to attach the corresponding number of petals. You can also use this activity for color matching and recognition.

I’ll be making these as an activity this weekend. Just wondering if you spray like a setting glue or lacquer on top?

Hi Delwen,
It isn’t necessary, and keep in mind that doing so would affect the sustainability of the project. Enjoy!
