Here’s a fun low waste valentines ideas for those who like to knit! My son has really taken to knitting this year, so these felt most fitting. The trick to winding these miniature balls of yarn is to make sure you’re winding it really tightly, but if you are finding that your yarn balls start to fall apart you can glue the yarn down as you go (I prefer not to, so that the ball can be unraveled and repurposed). If you’d like to use less yarn you can also start with a wood bead or small wool ball in the center and wrap around it.
Materials:
– wool yarn
– toothpicks
– cardstock
– rubber alphabet stamps
How to make wool yarn valentines
Step 1: How to create miniature balls of yarn
Wind the yarn around your finger several times. Remove the yarn from your finger, rotate sideways then wrap the yarn around the center several times. Fold in half and wrap again. Start winding, this time rotating the ball evenly after every couple wraps until your ball has reached its desired size. Knot or glue the end.
Step 2: How to create the knitting needles
Cut the ends off toothpicks to create knitting needles and push them into each ball of yarn. Use a rolled up piece of washi tape, sticky wax or tacky glue to attach to a card and write or use rubber stamps to add a valentines message! Ours reads “wool you be mine?”
