Growing your own wheatgrass is a great alternative to using plastic Easter grass and is one of our favorite Easter traditions. These Easter grass eggs are lovely given as gifts or as part of a Spring centerpiece– we add them to our waldorf Easter celebration ring each year. Soaking the seeds overnight (or even for an hour or so) prior to planting will help to speed up the process but it is not required. You can expect the grass to sprout within about 3 days and it will reach maturity between about 5-7 days, so I usually recommend planting these about a week before you need them. Eggshells are also a favorite choice of mine for seed starting, since they are biodegradable and make use of a waste material if your family already consumes eggs!

Instructions for Growing Easter Grass in egg shells
Step 1: How to prepare the egg shells
Tap a spoon on one end of each egg and remove the top portion of each shell. Empty the shell out completely and rinse well with hot water. I saved our egg shells over a period of time until we had enough of them. Boil eggshells for 5 minutes first to kill off any possible bacteria and make sure your egg shells dry completely before you begin. Add a drainage hole to the bottom of each shell by using the tip of a small screwdriver or an awl.
Step 2: How to plant your wheatgrass seeds
Carefully fill the inside of your egg shell three-quarters of the way with potting soil. Add a dense layer of seeds, making sure to not overlap them. Cover the grass seeds with a thin layer of soil and mist generously.
Step 3: How to take care of your wheatgrass
Place your eggshells on a brightly lit windowsill and gently mist the soil generously with a spray bottle every day, taking care not to overwater. Youāll want to keep the soil moist at all times, but not wet. The grass will sprout within about 3 days and will reach maturity between about 5-7 days. As the grass continues to grow you can simply trim the tops off and allow them to re-grow again. The wheatgrass can be added to so many things such as salads, juices or smoothies (or given to your dog or cat!)
