Plant your favorite herb into recycled tin cans for the easiest low-waste valentine! We make a few of these every year to give out as Valentines gifts and they’re always a hit. We’ll be transplanting starter plants that are already established into our tin cans so they can be gifted right away. I recommend visiting your local nursery to purchase your plants and saving any plant pots afterwards for reuse. These valentines can also be made into a “kit” by including a soil puck in your tin can, seeds and instructions for planting. I like to wrap our cans in recycled kraft paper and include a little card with customized care and repotting instructions. I’ll share some of my favorite herb puns below!
Materials:
– recycled tin cans
– herb starter plants (some of our favorites are thyme, mint and oregano)
– soil
– a large nail and hammer
– kraft paper
Valentines Recycled Tin Can Herb Garden
Step 1: How to Transplant Herbs into Recycled Tin Cans
Use a large nail and hammer to add drainage holes to the bottom of your tin cans. I add three holes per can. Place a small amount of soil on the bottom of the can if necessary. Transplant your herb into the can by removing it from it’s original pot, gently massaging some of the soil out of the root system and transferring it into the can. Fill any loose areas around the sides with additional soil. Make sure that the top soil line is below the top ridge of the can.
Step 2: Assembling your Herb Valentines
Wrap your tin can in kraft paper and secure with glue or tape. Print or write out your favorite herb pun on paper, cut it out and glue it on the kraft paper.
Favorite Valentine’s herb puns:
– You and me are mint to be
– You’re my all thyme favorite
– Be my valenthyme?
– You’re a big dill to me
– You are dill-lightful
– Oregano be mine?
– I beg your parsley, will you be my valentine?
