I’m all for finding ways to wrap and accent gifts using recycled and low impact materials that you have lying around at home, and I’m excited to share the tags that we made this year! I love these gift tags because they’re low-waste, can be made in a pinch and the entire tag is fully recyclable, compostable and/or biodegradable (depending on the cardboard that you choose). To make these, you’ll be folding and assembling a small Waldorf star and attaching it to a piece of recycled cardboard. The kite paper that we use measures 6.5” and I cut it into sixteenths (easier than it sounds! You’ll just cut the paper into quarters, then each of the four sections gets cut into quarters again). You’ll find a shortened tutorial below showing you how to fold the Waldorf star, and you can longer more detailed instructions by checking out this blog post — How to Make Waldorf Window Stars. These are also so versatile and would be great made into a card. Every year we try to wrap all of our gifts sustainably using materials that can be recycled, composted or reused after. You can see some of our favorite eco-friendly and reusable gift wrap options here.

– white sheets of kite paper

How to make kite paper star gift tags
For detailed instructions on how to make a Waldorf window star, check out this blog post.
Step 1: Begin with eight pieces of kite paper. I use sheets that measure 6.5” cut into sixteenths (cut into quarters, then each section is cut into quarters again)
Step 2:Fold your first piece of kite paper in half. Open the paper and fold in half the opposite way. Open the paper completely and fold one corner into the center. Repeat with the remaining corners until all corners have been folded into the center. Fold two opposite sides towards the center line to complete a star point.
Step 3: Repeat for the remaining 7 pieces of paper.
Step 4: Once you have all 8 points completed, assemble the star by applying a small amount of glue and attaching all of the points together. The side with the folds should be facing the back.
Step 5: Use a small amount of glue to attach to a recycled piece of cardboard. Use a hole punch to make a hole in the corner and attach a piece of natural twine!
